RSF Elektronik – an introduction

RSF Elektronik, a HEIDENHAIN brand, is one of the world's leading companies in the field of electronic measuring systems.

RSF Elektronik, a HEIDENHAIN brand, is one of the world's leading companies in the field of electronic measuring systems and it offers an extensive portfolio which includes almost all designs which are required by the market. The typical resolutions or measuring steps range from a few micrometres down to the nanometre range. Another core element of the product range are high-precision and resistant graduations which are manufactured in thin-layer technology on glass or other carrier substrates. RSF Elektronik also develops customized cable systems for the widest range of sectors and areas of application, and these are manufactured by the new Stříbřo, Czech Republic subsidiary. Thanks to the company's extensive distribution network, optimum customer service is guaranteed in practically all regions.

Increasing requirements in today's motion control applications ask for high precision exposed linear encoder systems. This is driven by steadily increasing demands for higher traversing speed, higher operating cycles, lower mechanical backlash and zero frictional force induced by the encoder. Only exposed, non-contact encoders fulfill all these requirements. Exposed encoders are optimized and commonly used in clean environments.

Exposed Linear Encoders

Increasing requirements in today's motion control applications ask for high precision exposed linear encoder systems. This is driven by steadily increasing demands for higher traversing speed, higher operating cycles, lower mechanical backlash and zero frictional force induced by the encoder. Only exposed, non-contact encoders fulfill all these requirements. Exposed encoders are optimized and commonly used in clean environments.

The MC 15 range is an example of the latest high performance absolute linear encoders from RSF. The scale graduation carrier is available as either a steel tape (self-adhesive), a steel tape (aluminium carrier), a glass scale with adhesive tape or a glass ceramic scale with adhesive tape allowing the system designer to match the thermal behaviour of the scale with that of the mounting surface. Measuring lengths of up to 10 metres can be realised.

Position data from the scale is transferred to the subsequent electronics via several standard interface options such as EnDat 2.2, BiSS C, Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Panasonic or Yaskawa.

A convenient multi-colour LED mounted on the scanning head displays the status/quality of the signals being generated, firstly to ease mounting and then to diagnose any faults in operation.

Exposed Modular Angle Encoders

Modular Angle Encoders without integral bearings establish the connection between the mechanism and the control electronics. In the field of automation, they are used both for recording the angle and position and for determining speed and acceleration values.

Modular Angle Encoders are required to convert the recorded value of a mechanical variable into electrical signals so that they can be evaluated by output devices, PLCs and industrial PCs.

The MCR 15 replicates the features of the MC 15 and applies them to an angle encoder. With the MCR 15 TTR, the graduation is applied to a steel or aluminium drum and is available in a range of outside diameters from 50mm up to 350.23mm. Alternatively a tape variant is available MCR 15 MBR which can be directly mounted on a shaft for example, giving full 360 degree positional information.

If less than 360 degrees of motion is required, the MCS 15 offers a convenient solution – a segment of tape graduation with adhesive tape.
